Although change ringing may be a familiar sound in the direct neighborhood of a North American bell tower, this traditional English art remains largely unknown to the wider public. Speaking from my own experience, early 2020 I had no idea that actual people were bringing musical history to life right around the corner from where I live. That all changed when I was invited by one of the Calgary bell ringers for a visit to the belfry. I have been bitten by the “bell bug” ever since.
Change-ringing is a fantastic hobby which has opened up a whole world of exciting opportunities for me to learn new skills and meet all sorts of like-minded people in a welcoming environment all over the world. Learning how to effectively teach new recruits was a natural step towards sharing the joys of bellringing across the pond.
Teaching has always been part of my life: physics & chemistry, flute playing, swimming or bellringing. I firmly believe that having a framework, like the ART scheme, supports learners and their teachers to enjoy the process of discovery. Ringing together always provides something new to learn and celebrate for everyone, with everyone at every level.
