After many years of keeping us all in line (no small task), Monica Hollows has officially retired from the Association of Ringing Teachers. She has decided to stepdown from her role as our long-suffering, endlessly capable Office Manager.
To say she has done a remarkable job is something of an understatement. Monica hasn’t just managed the charity, she has held it together with professionalism, patience, and what we can only assume is a secret stash of superpowers.
Over the years, she has worked with not one, not two, but three Chairs: Lesley Belcher; Andrew Slade, and now Neil Jones, each no doubt grateful to have had Monica as the steady hand on the tiller (and occasionally the one quietly pointing out where the tiller actually is).
She has also been instrumental, along with Steve, Judith and others, in the development of SmART Ringer 2, bravely joining the project team to wrestle with the IT system and help turn “mysterious technical chaos” into something approaching functionality. A true hero.
When we faced online attacks last year, Monica was the voice of calm and reason (while the rest of us were flapping), she was quietly sorting, reassuring, and keeping everything moving forward. Alongside all of this, she has been a constant source of support to so many of us, always ready with advice, encouragement, or a well-timed reality check.
Monica claims she is retiring because her son Ellis has secured a place at the London School of Music, and she and her partner Stuart are planning to spend more time travelling. We didn’t have the heart to tell her that children often become more dependent once they go to university, but we wish her the best of luck with that plan!
Thankfully, this isn’t a complete goodbye. Monica will continue as a volunteer on the ART Management Committee, so we won’t have to face the world entirely without her (collective sigh of relief).
We even managed a retirement celebration last week, albeit online. A little different from the “old days” of gathering in person for a proper drink, but still a chance to raise a virtual glass. Thank goodness for ART conferences, which remain one of the few opportunities we have to meet face-to-face, making them all the more special.
The overwhelming message from all who have worked closely with Monica is simple: thank you. We love you, we miss you already, and we can’t wait to meet up and ring with you and Stuart again soon. In the meantime, Stuart has whisked her off to Iceland for a well-earned holiday.
Enjoy your retirement, Monica. You’ve more than earned it.
