One of the (many) highlights of the week was a one-day teaching course – ART Module 1, Teaching Bell Handling – led by two gifted teachers from Down Under, David Smith and Kathi Downs. Several of us eager beavers spent all day Monday discussing, learning strategies, and role-playing in the tower (and eating delicious dim sum for a well-deserved lunch!). Sometimes we acted as the student and sometimes as the teacher; acting as the teacher was much harder! Choosing our words carefully (avoiding jargon; resisting the urge to over-explain) was emphasized. David and Kathi taught us to break down complicated maneuvers in a “whole–part–whole” progression; tailor our approach to each student’s learning style; make it fun; and most importantly stay positive. Easier said than done! But we all came away with a greater appreciation of the nuances of teaching, and motivated to help and encourage our beginners.
And we have new skills in our toolkits now! David and Kathi led us in several creative exercises, including how to pass the rope safely to another person while ringing, which will come in handy in an emergency. We also rang with the opposite hand (e.g., left-handed if we usually ring right-handed), to see how awkward rope handling feels for a new beginner.
