Get planning for the ART Conference
We are busy planning next year’s ART Conference which will be held in Loughborough over the weekend of 7-8 March 2026. The Saturday will be held at the Fearon Hall at Loughborough Parish Church and the Sunday at the premises of the Loughborough Bellfoundry Trust. On the Sunday we have the opportunity to take a guided tour around Taylors Foundry and museum, following the multi-million refurbishment of the main buildings and grounds.
The theme of this year’s conference time is ‘Keep the Spark: Motivation and Retention in Focus’ and we have some great speakers lined up. Bookings for the ART Conference will open in January 2026. If you are an ART Member, please watch out for the email in early January containing your member discount code. We hope you will be able to attend.
ART AGM – change of date
As the ART Conference is now taking place over the weekend of the 7-8 March 2026, we have taken the decision to move the AGM to Sunday 1 March 2026, by zoom at 8.00pm. Members will receive an invitation to register for the AGM in the new year.
Nominate someone for an ART Award
There’s still time to nominate someone for an ART Award in one or more categories:
- The Sarah Beacham Youth Award
- Excellence in Recruitment or Retention
- Inspiring Leadership in Ringing
- The Len Roberts Award for the Promotion of Ringing
- Band or Cluster of the Year
- LtR Achievement Award
- LtR Contribution Award
I’d particularly like to invite nominations for the Sarah Beacham Youth Award, which is for youth, school, and university groups and societies who are successfully recruiting, retaining and developing young ringers.

Teaching Forum – AI and bellringing
We are delighted that Elva Ainsworth has offered to host an online session on using Artificial Intelligence (AI) in relation to bellringing on 25 January 2025 at 8pm. AI is rapidly becoming part of so many areas of life, and the chance to explore its implications for bellringing with someone who understands both worlds so well is an opportunity we should truly value. Of course, we realise it’s Burns Night, so maybe we should all bring a wee dram along to set the mood!
Please register in advance if you want to attend this session:

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the session.
Replacement of SmART Ringer
In July I said that I had not mentioned the replacement for our core IT system, SmART Ringer, for some time. Now I can announce that the team have almost finished the coding of the first release of the software and are busy testing it and adjusting our other systems to work alongside it.
The coding and testing of the main application which provides the database and the desktop application, used by our administrative staff, is now complete and tested.
The web application which provides the user interface for the vast majority of our users, is also almost complete and testing is well under way. A version was demonstrated to the Trust Board and members of the ART Management Committee last weekend at our awayday in Loughborough. A few functions need completing but we now confidently expect that in the early new year we shall be testing the full system and all of the end-to-end linkages with our other systems.
The Online Learning Portal continues to evolve
All our resources are now hosted on ART Online. The newest offerings include guides for Course Organisers and ART Training Scheme resources. Course materials will be added shortly, including copies of the presentations for course delegates. Putting all of these resources together on the Moodle Virtual Learning Envrironment (VLE) will make information and guidance to both our members and to the general ringing public a lot easier to find.
If you haven’t visited it yet, do have a look; it contains lots of useful resources to help both teachers and learners.

Please note that if you had an existing log-in for our old onlinelearning site it will not work here, you will need to create a new account. Our old site has now been retired.
A recent update I mentioned in the Summer includes links to the Call Change Simulator, designed and developed by Steve Marriott. This is a powerful learning resource which allows you to build up your knowledge of how call changes work and for you to practice conducting call changes. It is endorsed by ART as a useful learning resource and is accessible directly via:
Changes to ART Day Course packs
From April 2026 we will be changing what we offer in the course packs delegates receive from ART. We will continue to provide copies of the relevant books, but the course pack will no longer include printed copies of worksheets which teachers may wish to use with their learners after the course. All delegates will have access to an electronic copy of the worksheets via ART Online and a pack of the worksheets will be available free in the shop for anyone who prefers paper forms. Switching to electronic versions enables us to keep our costs down as well as saving quite a few trees in the process!
ART Finances are in surplus
You will recall me saying in July’s Chairman’s Chatter that we had an excellent chance of breaking even on normal trading this year, perhaps with a small surplus!
I am pleased to report in this update that on current numbers the Trustees expect to return a small surplus of around £1300 for 2025. This is excellent news and justifies our attention to the costs of courses and the membership subscriptions necessary to support ART’s activities.
At our recent budget discussions we made a series of decisions designed to continue to deliver small surpluses each year to allow ART to continue to maintain its sustainability without major changes each year. This involves taking annual account of the real inflation we suffer, along with all other trading bodies whether charities or commercial enterprises, meaning that each year we will increase our charges in line with inflation whilst at the same time making sure that we do not generate too much surplus each year. As the government rate of inflation is published each year in September we are able to react in our budget for the following financial year. This we have done and along with some expected reduced IT and course pack costs, we expect to deliver a small surplus for next year too.
Looking Ahead
I will be stepping down as Chair at the 2026 AGM and I am delighted to report that Neil Jones has agreed to take over. Neil was appointed as one of our Trustees last year so is already familiar with ART.
Neil has been an active ringer since childhood. He trained as a primary school teacher, spending most of his career in Kent schools. Alongside teaching, he joined the Rochester Cathedral band, later becoming Tower Captain, and also served as Ringing Master and Chairman of the Rochester District.
Following early retirement in 2022, Neil was elected Chairman of the Kent County Association of Change Ringers. Passionate about teaching ringing, he has trained new bands, supported the Kent Young Ringers, and gained ART accreditation (M1 and M2F). He has helped raise ART’s profile within the KCACR. Neil is also a member of the Central Council and the ASCY and is honoured to be standing as ART Chairman at the March AGM.
The arrangements for the transition period as we move from the current SmART Ringer to the new system will be made in the new year. By the time of the conference in March we should have a new chair installed and a new IT system up and running.
Best wishes for a happy and productive Christmas and New Year.
Andrew
