It has been an eventful period since my last Chairman’s Chatter and I will attempt to summarise all that has happened and some of what I hope will happen soon.
ART Conference 2025
We had an excellent financial return last year which I am sure you will have seen either at the AGM or in the communications since then. This year is also proving to be steady and I see no reason why we might not break even this year, perhaps with a small surplus!
But to turn to our activities, I must say that the ART Conference this year, held in York, was excellent. Many thanks to Monica and the team but also to Annie Hall for leading on the organisation of the ART Conference and doing the deals!
Many thanks are due to the local team of Alison Edmonds and David Hull for delivering facilities the like of which we could have dreamt about, but the reality was better.
The mix of rooms and size of the venue at the University of York was tremendous and so much so that we are thinking of returning to York on a regular basis, particularly as so many of you seemed to enjoy the experience too. Do let me know your thoughts on a possible return to York, say every 3-4 years? It has the advantage of being very well connected by road and rail and is nearer the ‘North’ and of course, Scotland, than venues in the Midlands or South.

Next year’s conference will be held in Loughborough
The ART Conference next year will be in Loughborough on 7-8 March 2026 and we have the opportunity to take a guided tour around the foundry and the museum, following the multi-million refurbishment of the main buildings and the grounds. The funds for this came from a variety of Trusts and benefactors but the bulk was from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Heritage England who made substantial grants available for this historic and now, unique, operating bell foundry.
In Loughborough there is also a magnificent ring of 10 bells at the Parish Church, a stone’s throw from the Foundry and we will also have access to the spacious conference centre rooms and facilities at the church, in addition to the spaces at the Foundry.
Hellos and Goodbyes
Three new non-exec Trustees were appointed at the ART 2025 AGM – Neil Jones, Andrew North and Andrew Wilby. These join the Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer who are ex-officio trustees. Chris Enzor and Lesley Belcher stood down as ART Trustees at the AGM and we thank them for all they have done to support ART. (Lesley has not quite escaped just yet as she is still playing a lead role in developing and implementing the new version of Smart Ringer!) At the AGM we also said a sad goodbye to ART Management Committee members Lesley Boyle, Roger Booth, Clare McArdle and David Sparling, and gave a big welcome to Sally Brown. Again we are thankful for the support David, Clare, Roger and Lesley have given to ART over many years. David, Roger and Lesley will continue to support ART in their role as course Tutors.
ART also owes a great deal of gratitude to Ruth Suggett for the many editions of Tower Talk over the years. Ruth has spent many hours collecting stories and anecdotes that we have all enjoyed reading. But, like all good things, there comes a time when such things can only continue under new guidance and Ruth has now decided to step down from this task. ART is looking for a keen volunteer with a sense of humour and an eye for good copy! If you want to discuss this please do get in touch through towertalk@bellringing.org. Thanks.
SmART Ringer
I have not mentioned the replacement for our core IT system, SmART Ringer, for some time. However I can announce that the team have almost finished the coding of the first release of the software and we are busy testing it and adjusting our other systems to work alongside this new system. I hope to announce a date for the changeover very soon, watch this space…
As part of our work to prepare for the new version of SmART Ringer we will be introducing permission forms into our logbooks at the next reprint. While the old stock of logbooks is being used up you will be able to download a free copy of the form from the ART Shop to use alongside the old logbooks as needed. We are also implementing a new version of the ART Regulations, which will take effect from October 2025.

Online resources and courses
We have also been working hard developing the latest version of our online learning portal. If you haven’t visited our new online learning portal yet do have a look, it contains lots of useful resources to help both teachers and learners. You do not need to log in to access the toolboxes, but you will need to create (or log into) your own account to complete the online courses we have on offer. Please note this will be a different login to your SmART Ringer login and that if you had an existing login for our old onlinelearning site it will not work here, you will need to create a new account. Our old site has now been retired.
Have a look at ART Online
Going forwards all our resources will be hosted on artonline.bellringing.org, hopefully making things easier to find. A recent update includes links to the Call Change Simulator, designed and developed by Steve Marriott. This is a powerful learning resource which allows you to build up your knowledge of how call changes work and for you to practice conducting call changes. It is endorsed by ART as a useful learning resource and is accessible directly via this link:

The 2026 ART Awards
Also just a reminder that the ART Awards will soon be coming up again. Applications will open in the Autumn with the usual closing date of 31 December 2025. This year the judges received 57 nominations from all corners of the globe. Well done to everyone who was nominated and, of course, to the winners. Now is the time to start thinking about whether you want to nominate a person or group for an award. You can find out more here:
