On 14th March 2026, a beautiful sunny day, I was one of 11 students attending a day course that was part of the ART Teacher Training Scheme, ‘Learning the Ropes’. Our tutor was Claire Penny and Module 1 covering Bell Handling took place at the idyllic little church of St. Leonard’s in Pitcombe.
Claire gave us an overview of the ART approach to teaching bell ringing and how this very skilled activity is broken down into clear steps on the learning pathway – the ‘whole-part-whole’ approach, how to keep track of what is taught, and how to make and review lesson plans for each individual learner.
Next, in a practical session, she introduced us to teaching ringing up the tail end, followed by how to teach the handstroke. We all then subjected another student to our first tentative and wobbly steps trying to emulate Claire’s experienced teaching! Taking turns to be the teacher/learner was a good way to support each other with feedback, with Claire on hand to give guidance where needed.
Tea, coffee and very delicious cake (thank you, Emma!) replenished us for our next lesson where we were given tips on becoming a good teacher, with probably the most crucial tool we could have in our toolbox being developing our observation skills (and finding something to praise !).
The morning session concluded with learning how to teach the pivotal moment of combining both strokes together. After lunch, we moved on to ringing up and ringing down and the skills involved in taking and releasing coils correctly.
The theory sessions (filled with tips and anecdotal examples from Claire’s long experience of teaching!) were balanced by practical sessions throughout the training day which gave us insights into how to develop teaching skills and knowledge as well as experiencing tasters of what it feels like to attempt to teach someone.
The ART programme provides an organised structure for teaching new ringers which allows students to progress at their individual pace, with clear achievable goals that follow on from and build on previously learnt skills. For me as a potential teacher, being able to have access to such a supportive guide which will enable me to plan each lesson in advance in a clear order makes me feel much more confident and will hopefully help my future learners feel more confident too and therefore make better progress. With the ART course, teachers have access to many teaching supports such as guide booklets and online videos, and learners can chart their progress with their own logbook which the teacher fills in as they learn each skill.
