We gathered at Holy Trinity church in Darlington – a group of strangers all intent on mastering the intricacies of the smART ringing M1 course. There was a variety of experience within the group and we soon found common connections – the bell ringing world is quite a connected family.
The day was led by Christine Richardson and ringers came from North South East and West of the North East of England.
The challenge of analysing initial bell handling techniques to allow a consistent and competent development of bell handling is a great leveller as it made all of us question our own technique as well as trying to present the best ringing style and action to our fellow students. We were challenged to keep rotating between different partners and to move on to different bells with each defined practical session. The PowerPoint presentations were clear and concise and the practical aspect of the course was emphasised through the time split.
The hosts at Holy Trinity supplied tea and coffee and biscuits and a great lunch. The facilities and the welcome Andrea Enzor offered were excellent.
We all came away buzzing from the amount of ideas that the course had generated and exhausted by the sheer concentration we had been encouraged to apply.
Now all we have to do is to put these ideas into practice and recruit a few new ringers to our towers and then of course there is that question of assessment…..
