Nine ringers from South and Central Yorkshire took the first steps towards becoming ART-approved teachers when they attended a Module 1 course at The Gordon Halls Ringing Centre in Eckington, near Sheffield. The Centre at St Peter and St Paul, Eckington, is named after Gordon A Halls MBE, who was an inspiration to all ringers in Derbyshire and who died in 2002 from cancer.
The course was led by Neil Donovan, with support from Don Jones, the Tower Captain at St Peter and St Paul, Eckington.
Bob Rae, Tower Captain at the Cathedral Church of St Marie in Sheffield, said:
“The course was a real godsend for us, after we were thrown in at the deep end. My wife and I hadn’t been ringing for very long when the Cathedral Dean asked us to try to resurrect the St Marie’s band that died out in the 1960s. We managed to recruit seven learners from the congregation and we’ve had support from the Sheffield Branch and, in particular, David Jackson, who joined us on the course.
The Module 1 course gave us a whole series of new ideas and practical skills for aiding learners. It’s boosted our own confidence no end. We’d recommend it to anyone, no matter how long or short a time they have been teaching.”
Participants in the course were:
- Gavin Donnelly (Beighton & Eckington)
- Philip Hoole (Handsworth)
- Ian Hudson (Beighton)
- David Jackson, Maggie O’Malley and Bob Rae (St Marie’s Cathedral)
- Ann Booth (Kirkburton near Huddersfield)
- Susan Cook (Campsall near Doncaster)
- Matthew Rolfe (Eckington, Derbyshire)
