On a bright, sunlit day at the very end of February 2026, a lively group of bellringers from Bristol, Somerset and Devon gathered in the beautiful village of Sampford Brett. Ably led by Alena Wardle, they set themselves a particular challenge: to explain the art of bellringing — a wonderfully complex skill they each performed almost automatically — as though speaking to someone completely new to it.
Throughout the day, Alena guided them through a wealth of teaching techniques and practical “toolbox” exercises, designed to help break down this intricate art into clear, understandable steps. She encouraged them to think differently about skills they had long taken for granted, equipping them with fresh ways to inspire and support future learners.
There was much laughter along the way. The group shared stories, swapped experiences, and discovered new approaches together. Naturally, they also consumed far too much cake — an essential ingredient of any successful ringing gathering — and a splendid lunch, generously catered for by the Village Hall.
It was a day of learning, friendship and community spirit, leaving everyone better prepared to pass on the joy and tradition of bellringing to the next generation using the ART Learning the Ropes scheme.
