On a wet January morning, a small group made up of ringers of varying skill levels and years experience, gathered in the Columba Centre, St Columb Major to take part in the ART M1 Teaching Bell Handling course led by Phil Tremain, and supported by his wife De.
The day consisted of theory, interspersed with practical elements which we carried out on tied bells at St Columba’s Church.
The course was to help those who teach bell ringing to learners to learn best practice techniques, and consisted of sections on: identifying poor bell handling techniques and how to help learners improve, identifying and correcting these promptly was a key takeaway; how to step in when problems arise; different exercises to help improve bell handling and build confidence; and how best to deliver feedback.
We were very well looked after with regular refreshment breaks which consisted of a delicious selection of home-made cakes and biscuits to accompany our hot drinks and a very welcome warm and tasty pasty for lunch.
We all came away having learnt many worthwhile tips and keen to share these with our learners.
Thank you to both Phil and De for an enjoyable and educational day.
