We arrived at the pretty flint church at Ash by Wrotham in the Kent Countryside, at 8:45am for a 9am start. The course was a full day with breaks and a pause for a packed-lunch.
Although the day was cold and wet, the welcome to the Course was warm, with refreshments immediately available and introductions made before we commenced.
We were a group of 12 course members; Roger was our Tutor with Neil facilitating.
The day was very well structured. We had a balanced mix of theory, (seating in the Church with PowerPoint presentations) followed by practical sessions in the ringing chamber which conveniently was ground-floor, spacious and situated immediately behind our theory sessions.
Our group of 12, was split into 4 groups of 3. Within the 3s, we each took turns at pretending to be a complete beginner, whilst the second person took the role of the Tutor, applying the scenarios previously outlined by our Tutor Roger. The third person was in observation, providing helpful feedback. We continued this pattern throughout the day.
I was personally quite surprised how difficult it felt, both being the learner and also being the Tutor. It felt odd doing just the Handstroke (whilst the leaner got to grips with Backstroke) and vice-versa. As we are more familiar hopefully to ringing automatically, it was slightly discombobulating to consider each of the component parts. To teach, we need all the components to work, and these need to mastered one at a time. It gave me a real appreciation of how difficult it could be as a learner to acquire all the components and then start to put them together.
The course also focussed on the softer skills needed to be a good teacher. Specifically, the need for clear communication, encouragement and the need to correct any handling problems as soon as possible in a constructive manner.
The course materials are structured, with on-line resources and reference material available if required. We each got a pack to take away with us, documenting the day and noting the next steps to reach Accreditation as a Teacher.
Personally, I enjoyed the day very much. Roger and Neil are accomplished ringers and I appreciated their time spent encouraging others to improve and hopefully expand the number of ringers to keep our Towers alive in the years to come.
In conclusion, if you do get an opportunity to attend an ART M1 course, I can heartily recommend it. A day in a beautiful church, learning new skills with like-minded people, what’s not to like? (and there are nice biscuits as well)….
