Twelve ringers representing a range of experience levels met up at Bideford on Saturday to develop our practice in teaching others to ring on the Module 1 course led by Alena Wardle.
The day was split between theory based on Powerpoint presentations in the meeting room and practical sessions in the tower. We learned to break down each ringing action into its constituent parts before going into the tower to practice applying them in small groups (the whole – part – whole idea.) Alena led discussions about likely errors, and how we might address them, taking into account the trainee’s learning style and individual needs.
We learned about the different methods for support; whether by demonstration, explanation or physical intervention. Alena stressed the importance of good communication (verbal and using body language,) observation, feedback and positive reinforcement. Accurate, immediate feedback should be given only when earned and incorrect actions must be nipped in the bud. We experienced how useful it was to work in pairs so that one teacher could work with the learner whilst the other observe their movements from all perspectives.
I found it helpful to work with a partner as part of a small group in the practical sessions. This enabled me to see and hear a skill demonstrated and “coached” 4 times – once by Alena and once each by my group members.
A valuable part for the afternoon for me was to observe Alena making the wrong movements and identifying how we might correct them.
We were supported with a student pack, access to the website and its resources for teachers those for students via the “Learning the Ropes” scheme. In addition we were encouraged to work together and with a mentor to practise the skills learned during the module. For me this has meant working with a fellow tower captain to join our learners into one group overseen by an experienced ART teacher. In this way we hope to provide the intensive early training a learner ends to help them progress quickly.
So all in all a long day followed by taking the theory test on the ART website but hugely valuable in my journey towards accreditation.
