Twelve of us met at St James’ Bermondsey to undertake our one day learning to teach ringing course. As it had been difficult to find a course locally, I was looking forward to this day. Most of us were from the Docklands Ringing Association with a few from further away. We had a good mix of people – young and older. Some had done the Learning the Ropes scheme themselves. Others, like me, had learnt to ring many years before. Life got in the way and I have lapsed many times, otherwise I would be a much better ringer than I am! So it was reassuring that Steve Vickars, our tutor, told us that you don’t have to be an excellent ringer yourself to teach.
The day was a good mix of 4 theory and 4 practical sessions. We all got our step count up, climbing up and down the tower. So we felt we deserved the lovely cakes, scones and lunch provided by Louise Booth.
Practising the teaching methods on each other in groups of 3 showed us the need for really clear instructions. There was a real focus on positive encouragement for your learner. People are giving up their valuable time for this, so it should be enjoyable. In the theory sessions we talked a lot about how to teach different ages and also different styles of learning. Verbal instruction does not work well for everyone. As we all know, you have to be on the end of a bell rope and actually ring a bell over and over to cement good technique.
I think we all reflected on our own technique and whether we had acquired bad habits. Steve told us to correct any poor handling in our learners immediately and to use the part-whole-part method to teach the individual skills. At the end of our day, we were given a bad handling mistake to act out when ringing a bell to see if everyone could spot what we were doing wrong. This was a lot of fun and also quite difficult in some cases to do. A reminder to all of us that ringing is a difficult skill to master.
In all a really useful fun day and a good start to leaning to teach. I am now inspired to put these skills to good practice. I would certainly recommend this course.
