On Saturday, March 8th 12 enthusiastic ‘students’ made their way to the lovely St Mary’s Church, Billingshurst, to be part of the ART M2F course for teaching from Rounds to Plain Hunt. Some had travelled a considerable distance but all from the Sussex County Association of Change Ringers. (SCACR). The weather was chilly, but the sun shone which highlighted the picturesque setting of the church.
The day started with refreshments served in the adjacent hall. The work then commenced, facilitated by ART tutor David Sparling. Following introductions, the day was alternated between theory and practice sessions, necessitating moving from the church hall to the ringing room to use the simulator on 6 of the 8 bells.
A number of the ‘students’ had already undertaken the Module 1 Teaching Bell Handling Course and so the format of the day was not unfamiliar but also, the ethos of how to teach aspects of bell ringing in the whole- part-whole approach.
Everyone was given the opportunity to take part in the sessions especially the exercises such as ‘Kaleidoscope’ and ‘Dodgy’ Call Changes! (to name but a few!) The use of fluffy dice featured along with other ‘tools’ to help many skills associated with bell control.
It was good for all of us to experience being a ‘student’ and reminded us of those feelings! Setting the bell at backstroke was a challenge for a number of us who are purported to be more experienced than who we will be teaching in the future!
A big ‘Thank you’ to Vicky Chase (Training Lead for SCACR), who organised the day and set up the simulator. Also to Alison and Stuart Box who replenished us with continuous refreshments throughout, (including delicious homemade cakes), and to David Sparling for an enjoyable, educational and inspiring day. His enthusiasm was infectious, and we all look forward to putting everything we have learnt into practice and using the tools given. Next Step – logging in to compete the M2F online theory test!!!
