Twelve brave bell ringing trainers arrived at St Micheal’s church Bray to attend the first training of the year. The car temperature was was showing -4 Deg C at 10 am! This must have been one of the coldest days of the year. Warm drinks and the heating was on full in Bray church hall as we settled into the training theory. Claire Penny took us through a series of presentations during the day with practical and real life scenario training anecdotes.
The practical training occuring in the Bray’s church tower ringing chamber. Ascending a narrow staircase the trainees emerged into a spacious chamber with eight bell ropes and a training bell. The bells were already up on entering. After a brief introduction introduction the trainees were split into pairs and simulated exercises undertaken. One of the most reassuring aspects of the day was that how many of the challenges in training bell ringers were common to all. Our trainer for the day, Claire Penny, suggested a range of approaches but emphasized that there was no quick fix. The needs of each learner needs to be recognised and training strategy developed accordingly. A great day and thanks to Claire Penny and Bray church community for making us so welcome.
