As we all arrived at Marsworth Church on Saturday 5th October, the sun was shining but as we entered the church however, it was very cold!!
The course was run fairly locally it was good to see that we knew 6 out of the 8 attendees from various Herts County events. This was really useful as we would then be able to share our experience of the course and what we took from it, at a later date.
Clare McArdle, our tutor for the day, welcomed us with warm drinks and as we sat through the first theory presentation, the sun gradually worked its way across the pews – the lucky few on the south side began to feel its presence. All our drink breaks were taken outside in the sunshine to warm up!!
The theory sessions were professionally presented by Clare who was very knowledgeable and passionate about teaching bellringing. No question was treated as trivial and there was always an answer.
If you have attended an ART course before then you would have already heard something of the presentation but there was plenty of new material. There was also a very useful folder to take away.
The practical sessions, using a simulator, did not disturb the local people and were very useful. Everybody was offered a chance to conduct or to run an ‘exercise’ and it was great to see the exercises working in practice. Some of us encountered a problem with standing at backstroke (especially the tenor) but there was a great atmosphere, and much was accomplished. There was a good opportunity to ask questions throughout the whole day, even in the coffee breaks, and a more formal feedback at the end of the day.
Thanks go to the local ringers at Marsworth for the catering – both the plentiful hot drinks, the biscuits and the sumptuous lunch, which included a lot of home grown produce.
