Nottinghamshire has a distinct lack of ART accredited teachers and Mansfield District set about to change that by arranging to host a M2F course.
On 10th August a band of 10 willing ringing teachers assembled at Eastwood St Marys and were greeted by Moira and her foster dog. The majority of the ringers were from across Nottinghamshire but one had travelled all the way from Ipswich, it was clear there was a wide range of experience in the room with some ringers ringing for decades and others just a year, but everyone had the same enthusiasm to learn something new.
Moira outlined the theory behind learning and good practices to teach ringers. It was then off up the tower for some practical sessions – a few ringers were apprehensive of not knowing what to expect but that apprehension soon turned into excitement with Moira explaining some fun activities. Starting simple we discussed about ensuring good striking to aid learning and strong bell control, at which point a familiar tune came out in the form of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.
We then went onto some basic kaleidoscope exercises to build in places and simple dodges, taking it in turn to be ‘Student’, ‘Teacher’ or ‘Helper’, whilst all applying our own experiences and scenarios from our home towers.
Finally we looked at some methods that assist the learning of Plain Hunt on 2 ,3 and 4 to build up to Plain Hunt Doubles, this was a welcome change to some experienced teachers who admit just pushing ringers to learn plain hunt on 5 or 6.
The M2F course provided a great structured programme , that can allow ringers to build on foundational skills, which reap benefits in the future learning on methods. As the course was local, the future teachers now how a local support network to all offer support and guidance. I have already seen numerous exercises used across local towers and look forward to seeing the improvements in ringing that this brings.
