On Saturday 27th July I had the pleasure of participating in the M1 ART bell handling course at St. Audeon’s church in Dublin. Nine of us from four different towers, St, Audeon’s and St. Patrick’s in Dublin, Drogheda, and St. Mary’s in Blessington, participated in the module excellently facilitated by the illustrious David Sparling, who had travelled from Great Britain to be with us.
The session opened up with “the science bit”, an introduction to ART and its genesis. We swiftly moved into bell handling 101 with the theory input on what we would shortly put into practice.
A visiting bell ringing troop to the tower, to ring a quarter-peal, meant that the morning practical sessions were all run consecutively. David has a lovely calm manner and patiently broke each practice into its component parts to make it easier for each of us to follow and understand.
The practical sessions were hugely beneficial, working in triads allowed the perfect blend of being teacher, student and observer. Even though we were learning how to supervise and support new ringers on their bell handling, I learned a lot about my own technique which has been hugely beneficial to me.
A huge thank you to Kathleen and Derek McEndoo who organised the event, and ensured we were fed and watered throughout the day. Not forgetting the special treats of Kathleen’s delicious home bakes.
David brought the afternoon home with great professionalism. We explored the learning styles of individuals and the need for the teacher to be sensitive to which style is the preference of their learner, and adjusting their own style accordingly.
David left us geared up to sign up for the ART SmART Ringer website, and to take our theory test, plus to getting cracking with applying our newly gained learning. On behalf of my wonderful classmates, I would like to extend a huge thanks to David for his insight and expertise in guiding us through our M1 day course.
