On Saturday April 26th 14 bellringers mostly from South Somerset met at the lovely church of St Peter and St Paul in South Petherton for the ART Module 2F. We were of mixed ability and experience but all keen to progress our ability to teach ringing and support the many learner ringers we have in the area. We were also joined by Jez who impressed us in several ways, Firstly, he had driven from Leicestershire for the course (everyone else was very local) and secondly, he had only been ringing for a couple of years and ringing methods that some of us could only dream of!
The course was organised by the Ilchester Branch Education Officer, Dave Hammonds. Our tutor was Les Boyce, ably assisted by Sheila and Alena, coffee and teas served by Rosemary Heard who until recently was Tower Captain at South Petherton.
We started in a classroom environment with a theory session on bell control, listening, rope sight and rhythm and then moved to the lovely and spacious 12-bell ringing chamber. Here we did introductions, fun exercises to think about rhythm and counting as a group before moving on to actual ringing exercises. Despite our varied abilities, we all enjoyed and were challenged by the bell control exercises! Certainly there was plenty to think about and take back to our towers before we even progressed to Rounds! During coffee we were put into pairs for teaching exercises to present to the group throughout the day. This was great fun and varied from The Lottery (which I did with my able partner Annette) to teaching and explaining Plain Hunt. There were at least 5 other exercises between these two practices, all of which we did in two ringing teams and had a lot of laughs.
We left with a resource pack full of useful ideas, lots of enthusiasm and brilliant laminated diagrams of the various ringing challenges we had been enjoying throughout the day.
Many thanks to Les, I hope we were an easy group for his last Tutor session before he puts his feet up and hands the ropes to Alena!
