On January 31st 2025 on a very cold day in St Mary’s church in Dunmanway Co. Cork, six students attended the ART training course M1 – Teaching Bell Handling.
Of the students that took part, four were from the local ringing tower and two were from Waterford and Rosscarbery towers, including Cliff our previous vicar and an experienced ringer, and who initiated the installation of the Dunmanway bells. Our bells in St. Mary’s were installed in 2017 and most of the ringers had started then from scratch so we all had had the same experience.
When the bells were first installed we did have a group of children that were taught by Cliff, assisted by myself and others. Unfortunately, during the Covid pandemic it all fell apart and we had only a few new ringers afterwards. We knew we lacked teaching skills but did the best we could also with help of video material. This course was really something that we needed.
Our tutors for the day were Steve and Rebecca, who were very kind, patient, inspiring but meticulous. We started with some theory and had practice sessions alternating with theory. It’s amazing how much is involved and how you can break down the skill of bell handling into component pieces. We learned every step in the process of teaching handling in the right order and were also given feedback on our own ringing styles and “faults” to bring it to perfection. We also learned that bad habits are hard to get rid of so it is better not pass them on….
The theory sessions covering how people learn and how to keep them focused and enthusiastic, I found very interesting. We got a big pack of resources to get us on the way so next thing is to get new ringers! The day was good with coffee/tea breaks, lunch and sharing our experiences.
At the end of the course, satisfied but with heads full of info to chew on, we said goodbye.
The course coincided with the West-Cork Ringing Festival with 40 visitors from UK so there was a lot going on all weekend.
