I have been ringing bells for about 18 months now, and went on the M1 course both to brush up on my own techniques but to be able to pass on to others what I had learned.
The course took place over a whole day, but was broken down into manageable sections dealing with the theory and skills needed to effectively teach this subject. Each section was followed by a practical session in the bell tower. For this we were split into groups of three to each bell, assuming the roles of teacher, student and observer. I found this invaluable in understanding how to break learning down into manageable chunks, but also underlining the need to be able to communicate that learning to the individual student.
Despite the short time I have been ringing, my memory of the learning process had already begun to fade. This was a salutary reminder of the need to focus on the process from the perspective of the student!
The course was led by Phil Tremain who was very clear in describing the skills needed to teach ringing effectively and in leading the practical sessions which showed us how to do this in practice.
