“Our lot won’t know what’s hit em” – one of the parting shots overheard on leaving my M2F Course! Although perhaps sparing a thought for “our lot”, I felt the sentiment truly reflected the insight and renewed enthusiasm I had also personally obtained from attending this teacher training course.
Our group met at the church of St George in Ticknall, just south of Derby, which was both an easy to ring lightweight 10 bell tower and offered excellent facilities for running a course with plenty of space and a well appointed (and heated!) kitchen area for refreshments. There were eight attendees and we varied from a tower captain of twenty years to ringers who had learnt just two years ago. The course tutor quickly dispelled any preconceptions that only those with years of experience could make good teachers.
I found the course material both enlightening and thought provoking for dealing with how to set about the potential stumbling block of moving beginners on from handling and rounds. Although familiar with some of the perhaps traditional and ‘standard’ approaches to this, the wealth of options for different exercises was an eye opener. Also, once having had the principles explained, I was encouraged to see how relatively straightforward it would be to tailor the exercises for individual tower needs. I found the practical sessions particularly useful and the feedback or ‘stories’ from other attendees’ experiences also made me realise that no one is alone facing some of the typical issues that can arise with seemingly ‘stuck’ beginners. The benefits of trying different approaches and exercises were really brought to the fore and I think everyone took home new or enhanced ideas about the best way to organise and manage teaching sessions.
All in all, I found it a most rewarding day that I am sure will pay dividends for both my teaching abilities and those I am teaching.
