The Module 1 Teaching Bell Handling day course was presented and delivered by ART Tutor Paul Lewis at the church of St. Brynach, Nevern, North Pembrokeshire on Saturday 16th March, 2024. We met at St. Brynach’s Memorial Hall, which is situated beside the church, on a warm, if slightly damp, spring morning. Our group of eight students for the day represented Pembroke, St. David’s, Haverfordwest and Nevern towers and comprised of six students new to ringing in the last couple of years, and two experienced ringers.
Our first theory session looked at teaching as a skilled activity. We were introduced to the ‘Whole – Part – Whole’ approach; an underlying ART principle which was to provide reference throughout the day. A practical session in the tower followed introducing the basic components of bell handling. Working in pairs and utilising the step by step ‘Learning the Ropes’ framework, we talked about and practised the need to consult, listen, vary approach and look for what works with a particular student.
For lunch there was a short walk over the river bridge to the Trewern Arms. A tasty and affordable lunch was served up, providing the opportunity to remain collectively engaged with the morning’s experience.
Our afternoon session began with a tower practical on ringing up and down, followed by a presentation, DVD and discussion looking at solving handling problems, Next a theory to practice session looked at how we, as potential teachers, might approach solving common handling problems. Here again the step-by-step skill focused ethos brought a clarity and security for both teacher and taught. For me, as a recent newcomer, the innumerable ‘mini crises’ of the learning process were still available to memory. These memories and their causes were, I found, addressed by the process detail brought by this teaching model.
The day ended with an obvious sense of satisfaction following a day well spent. Our thanks go to Paul for bringing and delivering this valuable material to us in such a digestible and enjoyable way. The success of the day was also in no small part due to the work of Jane and Peter Heard, who not only looked after us all for the entire day, managing refreshment, but also managed all the detailed work of arranging booking and coordinating a most successful course which will without doubt strengthen and enhance Pembrokeshire ringing. We look forward to developing our teaching bell handling skills with the ART modular approach.
